WAKISO – The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) has officially entered into a strategic partnership with the Wakiso District Sports Office. This collaboration marks a significant step towards developing sports in schools right from the grassroots level, leveraging the experience of Uganda's football legends.

Bridging the Gap in School Sports

Following a high-level meeting between the FFI delegation and district officials at the Wakiso District Headquarters, a framework was established to utilize former professionals to mentor the next generation.

Mr. Brian Ssenyonga, the Wakiso District Sports Officer, highlighted the vast potential within the district. He noted that while many schools have specialized in sports; particularly football, young talent often lacks professional guidance to reach the next level.

"We have hosted a delegation of FFI members to partner with them," Mr. Ssenyonga explained. "Since they have been in the field of sports and possess the experience, they can help advise school-going kids on how to participate in sports and secure a bright future."

Delegation and Mentorship

A key component of this partnership involves FFI members stepping in to represent the district at various school sporting functions.

"As the Sports Officer, I get a number of invitations from different schools to attend their sports days, but at times I am busy," Mr. Ssenyonga admitted. "In this collaboration with the former footballers, I will delegate them to attend those functions on my behalf."

This move ensures that student-athletes are not only observed by experienced eyes but also receive direct mentorship on which games best suit their abilities from a young age.

Preparing for Life On and Off the Pitch

Speaking on behalf of the initiative, FFI Assistant General Secretary, Mr. Vicent Luganda, emphasized that the partnership looks beyond just technical skills.

"This partnership is going to help uplift the different talents in Wakiso District not only on the pitch but also off the pitch," Luganda stated. He highlighted the importance of mentoring players on "life after sports," ensuring young athletes are prepared for the future.

"We have to bridge the gap between the former footballers and the ones that are active," Luganda added, reaffirming FFI's commitment to creating a sustainable cycle of mentorship in Ugandan football.

Key Highlights of the Partnership:
