FFI Signs Icon Medical Deal to Support Retired Footballers

KAMPALA – The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) has signed a medical support partnership with Icon Medicare Services Uganda, strengthening access to healthcare for former players.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, at FFI’s offices at BMK House in Kampala. FFI Chairman Hajji Isaac Mubarak Ngobya and Icon Director Dr Marvin Nicholas signed the agreement, formalising a working relationship developed over nearly three years.
Medical Support Beyond the Final Whistle
Under the partnership, FFI members will receive some medical services free of charge, while others will be available at subsidised rates.
“There are many services that we shall offer to FFI members free while some will be offered at subsidized costs,” Dr Nicholas said.
He explained that members facing difficulties meeting subsidised costs could raise their circumstances through FFI’s Chairman and General Secretary. Support could also extend to family members through consultation, rather than automatic coverage.
Putting Members’ Health First
Ngobya welcomed the agreement, highlighting both injuries sustained during playing careers and health challenges that arise after retirement. Icon’s facility is located in Bulenga, along Mityana Road.
Health is one of FFI’s five strategic pillars, alongside sports, education, business and welfare. Its health work includes medical camps, doctors’ talks and partnerships supporting members and their families. This agreement strengthens that commitment to Life After Football.
For FFI, honouring Uganda’s football heritage also means caring for the people who created it. Former players deserve support long after their names disappear from match-day team sheets.
The partnership offers a practical expression of Solidarity: connecting members with medical support while keeping their welfare at the centre of the initiative’s work.
