Health Beyond the Pitch: FFI Medical Camp Serves Over 1,000 in Kampala
Victory for Community Health
On the 16th and 17th of January 2025, the Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) demonstrated that the influence of a footballer extends far beyond the final whistle. Under the patronage of Major General Katumba Wamala and the chairmanship of Engineer Hajji Isaac Ngobya, we successfully concluded a two-day medical camp at Mengo Senior School.
The initiative was a direct response to the health challenges faced by retired athletes and the wider community, aligning with our core mission to ensure a dignified "Life After Football."
Impact by the Numbers
The turnout was overwhelming and humbling. Our medical team worked tirelessly to attend to 1,002 individuals. The services provided were critical and comprehensive:
General Consultations: Over 1,000 people received general health check-ups, treating conditions ranging from hypertension and diabetes to respiratory infections.
Cancer Awareness: Early detection saves lives. Men over 40 underwent prostate cancer screening (PSA & DRE), while women were screened for cervical cancer.
Specialized Care: Thanks to our partners at ASG Eye Care, hundreds received eye screenings.
Saving Lives via Blood Donation: In collaboration with Nakasero Blood Bank, the community rallied to collect 103 units of blood, a vital contribution to aiding accident victims and sickle cell patients.
Leadership and Support
The event was officiated by esteemed guests who recognize the power of sports in community development. The camp was opened by Mr. Augustine Tamale (Chief Financial Controller, New Vision) and Rtn. Stella Margaret Davis.
During the closing ceremony, FIFA Representative Mr. Patrick Ntege commended the FFI leadership. He highlighted the unique role sports legends play in promoting social cohesion and pledged FUFA's continued support for such developmental initiatives.
A Community Effort
We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners who provided medical supplies, logistics, and expertise. Special thanks to Reproductive Health Uganda, Mavid Pharmaceuticals, First Pharmacy Wandegeya, and the Rotary Club of Wandegeya.
As we move forward, FFI remains committed to empowering retired footballers socially and economically, ensuring they remain pillars of their communities long after hanging up their boots.
