FFI Mourns the Passing of Legendary Defender Yusuf Ssonko ‘Kabanzo’
KAMPALA – The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Uganda’s most versatile and celebrated defenders, Yusuf Ssonko, popularly known as ‘Kabanzo’. Ssonko, a cherished member of the FFI living in the United Kingdom, was pronounced dead today.
A Rare Talent Who United Rivals
In the fierce landscape of Ugandan football, few players command the universal respect of having donned the jerseys of all three "VEK" giants; Villa, Express, and KCCA. Yusuf Ssonko was one of those rare talents.
As detailed in historical accounts by Kawowo Sports and The Observer, Ssonko was a tenacious right-fullback whose career began at KCCA FC. He later made headlines with a high-profile move to SC Villa in 1984, becoming a key pillar in their defense. His versatility and grit were instrumental in SC Villa’s historic double-winning team of 1986, a squad that is still revered today.
Ssonko’s journey didn’t stop at Villa Park. In 1988, he swapped the blue of Villa for the red of Express FC, completing the cycle of playing for Uganda’s biggest rivals before relocating to England in 1990.

Legacy of the ‘86 Double
Ssonko will forever be remembered as part of the golden generation of Ugandan football. He played alongside titans like the late Paul Hasule, Magid Musisi, and Godfrey Kateregga. His contribution to the game went beyond his skill; he represented a competitive spirit that defined an era.
Remembering Kabanzo
Even from the UK, Ssonko remained connected to his roots as a member of the FFI, embodying our mission to support and unite former players. His passing is a significant loss to the football fraternity both in Uganda and the diaspora.
Funeral Arrangements
Details regarding the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course as we coordinate with his family and the community. The FFI stands in solidarity with the Ssonko family during this difficult time.
Rest in Peace, Legend.
