The story of Issa
“Football gave me memories, friends and stories for days!”
Issa Salim, popularly known as Minora, is a former Ugandan footballer whose career stretched across Uganda and Kenya during one of East Africa’s most competitive football eras.
Born into the rich football culture of Jinja, Salim began his football journey at Jinja Senior Secondary School before joining Nytil FC in 1976. He remained with the Jinja side until 1979, establishing himself in senior football during a period when industrial clubs such as Nytil and Nile Breweries were major forces in Ugandan football.
Following the political upheaval of 1979, Salim moved to Kenya, where he continued his career with Kenya Taitex Mills FC. The move opened a new chapter in his football journey and exposed him to the highly competitive Kenyan game.
Salim later returned briefly to Uganda and joined Nile Breweries FC, becoming part of the club during its historic championship era. Nile Breweries won the Uganda league title in 1980, a landmark achievement that remains one of the proudest moments in Jinja football history.
He subsequently returned to Kenya and joined Kenya Breweries FC, where he enjoyed some of the most memorable years of his career.
Salim became a recognised attacking presence for the Brewers and was regularly among the goals. One of his standout performances came in April 1982 when he scored a hat-trick in a 3–1 victory over Transcom.
His impact continued over several seasons. In 1987, he scored twice against Scarlet before later grabbing the winning goal in a 1–0 victory over AFC Leopards, one of Kenya’s traditional football giants.
Regional Glory
Salim was also part of an important period in Kenya Breweries’ regional football history.
The Brewers rose to the summit of East and Central African club football, winning the regional championship in 1988 after defeating Sudan’s Al-Merrikh in the final.
Salim’s personal collection preserves a photograph of him proudly wearing his 1988 East and Central African championship medal, a lasting reminder of one of the greatest achievements of his career.
Kenya Breweries continued their regional dominance by retaining the title the following year, defeating Tanzania’s Coastal Union in the final at Nyayo National Stadium.
For Salim, these tournaments were about more than trophies. They brought unforgettable journeys across East Africa, fierce rivalries, friendships and experiences that remained with him long after his playing days.
One of the most dramatic episodes of his career came during a football trip to Madagascar, where crowd violence placed players in serious danger. It remains one of the many stories from a career played during an era when travelling for continental and regional football could be as demanding as the matches themselves.
Life Around Football
Salim remained closely connected to the game after his peak playing years.
His personal football archive includes images from later involvement with Maji FC, including the period surrounding the club’s Kakungulu Cup final against Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium.
His journey reflects a generation of Ugandan footballers who carried their talent beyond national borders and became part of the wider story of East African football.
From Jinja Senior Secondary School to Nytil, Nile Breweries, Kenya Taitex Mills and Kenya Breweries, Salim built a career defined by resilience, competition and memorable success.
Looking back on those years, he sums up his relationship with the game simply:
“Football gave me memories, friends and stories for days!”
Today, Issa Salim’s story forms part of the football heritage that the Former Footballers Initiative seeks to preserve; ensuring that the achievements, experiences and sacrifices of Uganda’s former players remain accessible to future generations.
