The 13–1 Rout: Uganda’s Record Win over Kenya

In 1932, Uganda defeated Kenya 13–1 in Kampala to win the Gossage Cup. The twelve-goal margin became the most emphatic victory in Uganda’s international football record and an enduring landmark in the rivalry between the two neighbours. At the time, the Gossage Cup was contested by Uganda and Kenya, before Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined in later years. Uganda’s victory reclaimed the trophy after Kenya’s success in 1931 and added to the titles Uganda had already won in 1928, 1929 and 1930. The result also opened a sustained run of Ugandan success. After the competition was not held in 1933 and 1934, Uganda won every edition from 1935 to 1940. The 13–1 score remains a striking chapter in the early regional competition that preceded the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup and the CECAFA championship.
