A Giant Falls: FFI Mourns the Passing of "The Field General" Captain Polly Ouma
The Uganda Cranes legend, veteran administrator, and serving FFI Executive Committee member breathed his last on his way to Nsambya Hospital.

KAMPALA – It is with profound sadness that the Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) confirms the passing of one of Uganda’s most decorated sporting icons, Captain Polly Ouma. The legend breathed his last this morning, Tuesday, December 30, 2025, on his way to Nsambya Hospital, Kampala.
Until his passing, Captain Ouma was an active and vital member of the FFI Executive Committee, serving as the Regional Representative for Northern Uganda.
A Colossus of the Game
Few individuals have shaped Ugandan football as comprehensively as Polly Ouma. Known affectionately as "The Field General," he captained the famous Simba FC army side to the 1972 CAF Champions League final—a feat yet to be matched by any Ugandan club.
He was a cornerstone of the Golden Generation, representing the Uganda Cranes in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (1968, 1974, and 1976) and providing senior leadership during the historic run to the 1978 AFCON Final in Ghana.
Service Beyond the Pitch
Ouma’s retirement did not mark the end of his service. He transitioned into a highly successful coach, winning league titles with SC Villa, and later served as the Vice Chairman of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
FFI General Secretary, Mr. John Kennedy Lubogo Mutatwala, described the loss as immeasurable.
"Captain Polly was not just a colleague; he was a library of wisdom and a pillar of discipline," Lubogo stated. "He bridged the gap between the amateur era and the modern game. His contribution to the FFI Welfare strategy was immense. We have lost a father figure."
Legacy and Funeral
The FFI is currently coordinating with the family and relevant sports bodies regarding funeral arrangements. Details will be communicated to the public in due course.
We invite the football fraternity to revisit the life and times of this extraordinary man. His story is the story of Ugandan football.
