KAMPALA – The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) has issued a formal call for assistance to support one of East Africa’s most decorated football sons, Abbey Nasur Muteguya.

The "Workaholic" winger, who famously scored the decisive goal against Nigeria to send the Uganda Cranes to the 1978 AFCON Final, is currently in a critical condition battling health complications at his home in Naguru. The FFI Executive Committee has confirmed that Nasur requires immediate and specialized medical attention, ongoing treatment, and welfare support during this difficult period.

A Legend’s Legacy
Abbey Nasur’s contribution to football in the region cannot be overstated. In Uganda, he was the engine of Prisons FC for nearly a decade. In Kenya, he remains a cult hero for Gor Mahia, having led the club to the Mandela Cup in 1987. For the national team, he was the definition of reliability, representing the Golden Generation with distinction.

"Nasur ran for this country when it mattered most," stated FFI General Secretary John Kennedy Lubogo. "He carried our flag with pride. Now that he is unable to run, it is the duty of the nation, the fans, and the fraternity to walk this journey with him."

FFI Mobilization
Following a verification visit by FFI Executive member and Nasur's 1978 teammate, Captain Polly Ouma, the initiative has activated its Welfare Pillar (Munno Mukabbi) to coordinate the fundraising effort. This ensures that:

  1. All contributions are centralized and accounted for.

  2. Funds are dispatched directly to medical service providers and the family’s immediate welfare needs.

  3. The public receives transparent updates on his progress.

A Call to Action
We appeal to the Government of Uganda, corporate partners, the Kenyan football fraternity (particularly K'Ogalo fans), and all well-wishers to stand with this icon.

We are not asking for charity; we are asking for an "assist" for a man who provided so many for us on the pitch.

How to Contribute
