KAMPALA – It is with heavy hearts that the Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) confirms the passing of one of Uganda’s most decorated football sons, Abbey Nasur. The 1978 AFCON finalist passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the age of 74.

While the nation was silent due to the recent internet communications blackout during the election period, the football fraternity was in deep mourning. Today, as we reconnect with the world, we officially pay tribute to a man who put Ugandan football on the global map.

A Winger Who Could Fly
Nasur was not just a player; he was a phenomenon. Rising from the dust of Naguru, he became a household name with Prisons FC (now Maroons) before etching his name into history with the Uganda Cranes. He famously scored the winning goal against Nigeria in the 1978 AFCON semi-finals, a strike that secured Uganda’s only appearance in an African continental final to date.

A Cross-Border Icon
Nasur’s legacy transcends Uganda. Following the political instability of 1979, he moved to Kenya, where he achieved cult hero status with Gor Mahia. He became a pivotal figure in K’Ogalo’s dominance, winning multiple league titles and the prestigious Africa Cup Winners' Cup in 1987. He remains a rare bridge that unites football fans in both Kampala and Nairobi.

A Life Well Lived
After retiring, Nasur dedicated his life to coaching and mentorship, handling teams like KCC FC (KCCA) and Maji FC. In his later years, he was an active voice within the FFI, constantly advocating for the recognition and welfare of the "Golden Generation."

He was laid to rest on Wednesday, January 14, in accordance with Islamic rites. The FFI Executive Committee extends its deepest condolences to his family, the residents of Naguru, and the entire East African football family.
