KAMPALA – Members of the Former Footballers’ Initiative joined students, alumni, parents and community supporters for the second edition of the Tambula Mengo Run on Saturday, 15 August 2026.

The 10-kilometre charity run started and ended at Mengo Senior School, following a route along Hoima Road. The event was flagged off by the Archbishop and attracted participants committed to supporting the school’s development.

Among the former footballers who participated were Jimmy Ssekandi, Richard Makumbi, Edward Baguma Atenyi, Vicent Kayonga Luganda, Resty Nantumbwe, Nakanwagi, John Kennedy Lubogo Mutatwala and Vincent Sebanobe.

Running for a Worthy Cause

The annual run raises funds for the construction of a nine-storey dining hall at Mengo Senior School.

The school has nearly completed the first floor, but substantial resources are still required to deliver the entire project. Organisers hope to complete the development within three years and have set an ambitious fundraising target of at least UGX 1 billion.

The second edition received support from several corporate partners, including MTN, Pearl Bank and Hema.

Strengthening a Valuable Partnership

FFI’s participation also celebrated its growing relationship with Mengo Senior School. The school has supported the organisation by providing a venue for important activities, including its medical camp and annual Mass.

“Mengo is our partner. We organise the medical camp and Mass at the school, and they provide the venue for us free of charge,” FFI National Coordinator Walusimbi Wooto said.

Wooto explained that supporting the school’s cause was important to FFI, while the run also provided former players with an opportunity to remain active and maintain the friendships built through football.

FFI’s participation demonstrated the spirit of Solidarity that continues to unite Uganda’s former players long after their competitive careers.

Promoting Fitness After Football

Maintaining an active lifestyle is an important part of preparing former players for a healthier and more fulfilling Life After Football.

Community activities such as the Tambula Mengo Run allow veterans from different generations to exercise together, reconnect with supporters and remain visible within society.

The gathering also reflected the continuing influence of Uganda’s football legends. Although their playing days may have ended, their willingness to serve and inspire communities remains strong.

FFI Remains Committed to Community Service

FFI congratulates Mengo Senior School on successfully holding the second Tambula Mengo Run and appreciates every participant, sponsor and organiser who contributed to the occasion.

The organisation looks forward to strengthening this partnership and participating in more initiatives that promote education, wellness and community development.
