Jimmy Kirunda is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished football personalities in Ugandan history. A colossal figure on the pitch and a gentleman off it, Kirunda defined the country's most successful era on the continental stage. He revolutionized the role of a defender in Ugandan football, pioneering the "overlapping" style that saw him frequently surge forward to score vital goals, earning him the nickname "The Berlin Wall" for his impenetrable defense and imposing presence.

Early Beginnings

Kirunda’s journey to greatness began on the humble grounds of the Mulago Hospital playground, where he honed his skills alongside other future stars like Jimmy Muguwa. His talent was further nurtured during his education at Old Kampala Senior Secondary School in the 1960s and 70s, where his leadership qualities first became apparent.

The KCC Dream Team Era

Domestically, Kirunda was the foundational pillar of the legendary Kampala City Council (KCC) "Dream Team" of the 1970s. His commanding presence in the backline was instrumental in the club winning its first-ever National Football League title in 1976. Two years later, he anchored the team to continental success, lifting the 1978 CECAFA Club Championship.

His dominance in the league was so profound that in 1974, during a high-stakes match against rivals Express FC, Kirunda unleashed a powerful equalizer. The goal was so intense that it reportedly caused an Express FC supporter to collapse and pass away from shock, an event famously recorded in Ugandan football lore as the "Goal of Death."

A National Team Icon

Kirunda’s legacy is most tightly woven with the Uganda Cranes. He holds the prestigious and unmatched record of being the only captain to lead Uganda to three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final rounds (1974, 1976, and 1978).

His international career began early; he was a key member of the squad that toured West Germany in 1970, a historic tour that marked the first time the national team played under the tag "The Cranes."

Perhaps his single most valuable contribution to the nation occurred in 1977 at Nakivubo Stadium. In a crucial AFCON qualifying return leg against Ethiopia, with the game deadlocked in injury time, Kirunda demonstrated his trademark overlapping instinct. Abandoning his defensive post, he moved forward to connect with an Eddie Semwanga free-kick, heading home the winner that secured Uganda’s qualification for the historic 1978 AFCON finals in Ghana, where the team would go on to reach the final.

Life After The Final Whistle

Following his illustrious playing career, Kirunda did not abandon the sport. He transitioned into administration and technical leadership, becoming a Senior FUFA qualified coach. He remained a vocal advocate for player welfare and the preservation of football heritage, serving as an active committee member of the Ex-International Footballers Association (EXIFA) until his passing.
