The Inaugural Kabaka's Cup
In 1925, an early organised cup competition began under the Uganda Football Association. Recorded as the UFA Cup and subsequently known as the Kabaka’s Cup, it became an important part of Uganda’s domestic football tradition. The same record identifies King’s College Budo as the first winners, defeating Makerere College 4–1 in the final. The competition reflected the central role of educational institutions in early Ugandan football. Budo’s school team and its Old Boys fielded separate sides, with both winning the trophy on several occasions in later years. As the tournament developed, government and workplace teams became prominent, including the Public Works Department, Entebbe Government Printing Press and the railways. Later known as the Luwangula Cup, the competition was replaced by the Uganda Cup in 1971, connecting the country’s early cup football with the modern knockout championship.
