Simba Become Uganda’s First African Club Finalists

Simba FC became the first Ugandan club to reach the final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1972, the competition now known as the CAF Champions League. Captained by Polly Ouma, the army side brought Ugandan club football to the final stage of Africa’s leading club competition. Uganda Cranes coach Burkhard Pape helped prepare the team alongside Wilson Ogwal. Simba’s route to the final included a 5–1 aggregate victory over Ethiopia’s Saint George and a 4–1 aggregate win against Libya’s Al Ahly Tripoli. In the semi-finals, they held Ghana’s Hearts of Oak to a 1–1 draw away before winning 1–0 at Nakivubo, securing their place in the final with a 2–1 aggregate victory. Guinea’s Hafia FC won the first leg of the final 4–2 in Conakry on 10 December. Simba returned to Nakivubo for the deciding match on 22 December, but a 3–2 defeat gave Hafia the trophy with a 7–4 aggregate victory. Simba finished as continental runners-up, setting a landmark in Uganda’s club football history.
