KCCA Break Through to the Champions League Group Stage
KCCA FC became the first Ugandan club to qualify for the group stage of the modern CAF Champions League on 17 March 2018. A 1–0 victory over Ethiopia’s Saint George at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo, secured a 1–0 aggregate win after the first leg had ended goalless. Under coach Mike Mutebi and captain Timothy Awany, KCCA made the decisive breakthrough shortly after half-time. Muhammad Shaban headed in a cross from Mustafa Kizza to score the only goal. The achievement followed KCCA’s appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage in 2017, taking the club into the group phase of Africa’s leading club competition. KCCA went on to record another memorable result in the campaign, defeating Egypt’s Al Ahly 2–0 on 15 May for their first Champions League group-stage victory. Goalkeeper Charles Lukwago saved a first-half penalty, helping his side keep a clean sheet against the competition’s record champions.
