Uganda Cranes Reach the AFCON Round of 16
Uganda Cranes secured a place in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 on 30 June 2019, finishing second in Group A at the tournament in Egypt. Led by coach Sébastien Desabre and captain Denis Onyango, Uganda progressed beyond the group stage for the first time since their run to the final in 1978. The campaign began with a 2–0 victory over DR Congo, with Patrick Kaddu and Emmanuel Okwi scoring Uganda’s first goals in an AFCON win since 1978. A 1–1 draw with Zimbabwe, in which Okwi scored again, took the Cranes to four points. Despite losing their final group match 2–0 to hosts Egypt, Uganda retained second place and advanced to the knockout stage. Uganda faced Senegal at Cairo International Stadium on 5 July. Sadio Mané’s first-half goal decided the match, while Onyango saved a second-half penalty from the same player. The 1–0 defeat ended Uganda’s campaign in the round of 16.
