Uganda Hippos Finish Runners-up at the U-20 AFCON

Uganda Hippos finished as runners-up at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on 6 March 2021, reaching the final on their first appearance in the tournament. Coached by Morley Byekwaso and captained by Gavin Kizito Mugweri, Uganda lost 2–0 to Ghana at Stade Olympique in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Ghana captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored both goals. Final: Ghana 2-0 Uganda Uganda’s route to the final included a quarter-final victory over Burkina Faso, winning 5–3 on penalties after a goalless match. In the semi-final, Derrick Kakooza scored a hat-trick as the Hippos defeated Tunisia 4–1, with Richard Basangwa scoring Uganda’s opening goal. Kakooza finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals and joined left-back Aziz Kayondo in the team of the tournament. Byekwaso was selected as the tournament’s best coach, while Uganda received the Fair Play Award. The campaign established a major continental milestone for Uganda’s youth football.
