Story

The story of Edward

“I had the immense honor of meeting King Pelé. It was a moment of greatness for me, my family, and the whole nation.”
Edward Baguma Atenyi

Born on February 11, 1955, my story is interwoven with the golden era of Ugandan football. From humble beginnings on school pitches to captaining a team before the legendary Pelé and representing my nation on the continental stage, my life is a testament to dedication, adaptability, and a lifelong love for the beautiful game. Now 71, I continue to serve my community as a politician and an advocate for the welfare of former footballers.

Early Life & Education

My football journey began during my secondary school years. I attended St. Henry's College Kitovu in Masaka for my O-Levels from 1969 to 1973, where I first joined the school football team. It was during my A-Levels in Kampala (1973-1975) that my talent truly began to shine. While playing for Old Kampala Senior Secondary School, my skills caught the eye of national selectors, earning me a spot on the Uganda Cranes Youth Team. I balanced my passion for sport with my studies, eventually earning a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Kyambogo Technical College (now Kyambogo University).

A Stellar Football Career

My professional career took off in 1973 when I was picked by Coffee Football Club during my school vacation. A versatile player comfortable as a defensive midfielder and across the backline, I became a stalwart for both club and country. I played for Coffee FC and UCB FC, dedicating over a decade to the Coffee Marketing Board team.

My leadership qualities were evident early on. One of my most cherished memories is from 1975 when I was selected to captain a team of Uganda's best young talent to play an exhibition match before the visiting football icon, King Pelé. I recall the immense honor of meeting the global superstar, a moment I describe as great for me, my family, and the whole nation.

I also captained the East African Community Team, a squad comprising players from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, further cementing my status as a regional football leader. I retired from active football in 1982.

Life After Football: Family, Business, and Service

Retirement from the pitch didn't mean slowing down. I transitioned into private business and focused on building a stable life for my family. I am a proud husband and father of six children, prioritizing their education to the degree level, a personal achievement I credit to the discipline and earnings from my football career. I also secured my family's future by acquiring land in Fort Portal.

Today, I serve my community as a politician, holding the position of Councilor 3 for Kampala Central Division. However, my heart remains close to the sport that shaped me. I am the Assistant Secretary of the Former Footballers Initiative, an association dedicated to supporting retired players. Through this role, I passionately advocate for athletes to plan for their futures, emphasizing education and family stability to avoid the hardships many face after hanging up their boots.

As I look back on a life filled with sporting glory and public service, I stand as an inspiring figure; a legend who not only played the game but used it as a foundation for a life well-lived.
